Le Tala i lo matou igoa - Behind our Name
Every name holds a story. Our name is more than a label - it is a promise, a purpose, and a connection to our roots.
In Samoan culture, names carry deep meaning. They reflect our genealogy (gafa), our land (fanua), and the values we carry from generation to generation.
TMA is a abbreviation for TAUPOU MA LE ALOALI’I. To honor the sacred roles of Samoan royalty - both female & male - who represent their families, villages, and culture with dignity, poise, and service. These names are not just symbolic. They reflect the highest standards of conduct, leadership, and grace in Samoan society, which we strive to instill in every dancer who walks through our doors.
👸🏽 Taupou - Princess is the daughter of the High Chief, represents her family and village and is seen as a symbol of purity, honor and respect. Her role is not only to perform - but to uphold the fa’asinomaga (identity) of her people.
🤴🏽 Aloali‘i - Prince is the son of the Tupu (King) and is the male counterpart of the taupou - taught from a young age leadership and cultural responsibility. He carries the honor of his family name and must show strength, humility, and service in all that he does. His role is to protect, serve and uphold the values of his people.
We Chose These Names not only to honor the lineage of our founder but to most importantly to:
Celebrate the balance of leadership in Samoan culture - both feminine and masculine
Remind our students that they are royalty in their own identity
Uphold the cultural importance of discipline, dignity, service & pride
Teach our dancers that every performance is not just art - it is a representation of family, ancestors, and the village.
What It Means for Our Dancers - Every child who joins our group; learns that:
Their identity is sacred
Their culture is a gift
And their role as a dancer is both a celebration and a calling
We don’t just teach dance - we raise cultural ambassadors. That is the legacy that is Taupou Ma LeAloali’i.
